Post HELP FJ Wiring Reply with quote
The FJ is 95% done just need to plum the radiator, connect a couple vacuum lines, fuel lines, and wire the motor. Im going for the simple stupid method and plan on using two toggle switches and a push start button. I need one toggle for the fuel pump and another for the coil? The push start should only be connected to the starter right? Also there is a resistor i believe goes b/w the battery and coil? Also is there some sort of thingamajig needed to keep the alternator from back feeding? It’s a ’72 FJ 40 with a chevy 292 with points. Thanks for the help in advance

unless you have an electric fuel pump u dont need a toggle switch for the fuel pump.

yes a toggle switch for the coil to turn your spark on, then a push button for the starter. if you have a GM alternator it should be internally regulated so i think backfeeding should not be an issue but im not sure on that. i don't know of any resistors between the battery and the coil, but if you had one on the previous set up then yes i would say run it in this set up.

Jarrett,
If i remember right there should be a drop resistor (white porcelain w/ two tabs) mounted on the passenger side fender well.
Route your wiring from 12 volt source thru switch, to drop resistor then to coil.

Yes the GM style internally regulated will kill your battery if you leave directly hooked up to your battery. Reason being, the reg. will constantly monitor your battery voltage, drawing the battery down dead.
Solution: Put a switch in the 12 volt exciter wire for the alternator.

Yes: push button goes between 12 volt source, and the "starter "post on the solenoid. Get a Heavy Duty push button for this. It will be worth it.

If i was wiring it i would use three toggle switches and one push button.
Toggle switches for coil, fuel pump, and alternator.
Push button for starter.

Give me shout if you need any more help.

95% sure, all i have to do is get a new throttle cable (the one on there is down to 2 strands i think) finish hooking up the clutch and clean up the wiring. The motor runs strong.
